What Are Ledger’s Co-Stars Saying About His Performance As The Joker

Maggie Gyllenhaal

“To be that incredible in a movie that’s this huge, that’s about so many things, is really an accomplishment,” she said. “In a way I feel funny thinking about the Oscars when he isn’t alive, but at the same time I’m a member of the Academy and I would vote for him.”

She also said, “In order to be a good actor you have to find a place where you are free, but it’s very unusual to be absolutely free in the way that he was in this movie. It was inspiring working with him.”

“He hit it in the entire performance,” she said. “It’s so difficult to do that in a huge movie like this and much easier to do in the tiny movies. That’s why those are always the people who win Academy Awards.”

Christian Bale

“I do think that Heath has created an iconic villain that will stand for the ages, and of course, I would love to see him get an award,” said Christian. “But you know, to me, you can witness his talent, celebrate his talent within this movie. Anything else is gravy.”

He also said, “A lot of people talk about awards all the time, and its early days. But if anybody deserves it, of course, it is Heath in this.”

“This kind of movie is not the kind of movie that you would usually anticipate garners awards for actors,” Bale agreed. “But Chris has made such a smart movie that there is that possibility, even if it never happens, that people are at least considering that.”

Gary Oldman

“I think it’s one of the most psychologically scariest screen villains ever; I think it out-villains Hannibal Lecter,” Oldman said. “It would surprise me if he didn’t get a posthumous Oscar for it.”

“The Academy doesn’t always recognize work in this kind of genre, but I think he’s probably going to get an Oscar nomination,” Oldman told reporters at a publicity event in Beverly Hills.

“Over the years when I’ve seen great performances — Nicholson in ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest‘, Al Pacino in ‘Dog Day Afternoon‘ — you go ‘wow, there’s something really special at work here’. And I think Heath’s done that here. It’s like he’s gone through the sound barrier.”

Michael Cane

Cane told Usmagazine.com, “I just watched him and talked to him for three days and I thought he was extraordinary. I think he’ll get a posthumous Oscar nomination at least.”
